Solar Thermal Systems

Solar thermal units or solar collectors are the most widely used type of solar power. In a basic unit, there is an insulated panel or box with a glass or plastic cover and a dark absorbing plate. As the sunlight passes in through the glass, the absorber plate heats up and the heat is transferred to a fluid (for example, a water or oil). The fluid is pumped around the building, spreading the heat. In Japan and China, solar thermal units are widely used. In Tokyo alone, there are nearly 2 million buildings with solar water heaters.
